Refrigerator Cooling: When Should You Cry For Help?

Refrigerator Repair

Unlike that old song about “ working 9 to 5 and what a way to make a living,” your refrigerator works overtime, through holidays and vacations, special occasions, weekends, midnight through dawn, dawn through dusk or better put, all the time. Its function is singular and consistent: to keep your food fresh always.

The refrigerator gets taken for granted; there’s no question about that. Everyone assumes theirs will work and when that door opens a light will come on and whatever we touch will be cold. But what happens if that doesn’t happen? What should you do? So glad you asked.

If your refrigerator isn’t cooling properly, and exhibiting extremely cold or warm temperatures, it could be a sign of a serious malfunction. Before you accuse it of being rude and aloof and/or panic, check your thermostat. It may just need an adjustment in which case you don’t need to call in an appliance repair specialist.

It is important to know that the refrigerator thermostat works in conjunction with the compressor, the condenser works with the metering device and the evaporator, all of which collectively keep the air inside the refrigerator at the temperature setting indicated on the appliance. It is due to this complex arrangement that often an appliance repair specialist is needed to correct problems associated with the thermostats on most refrigerators.

On most refrigerators, the thermostat is a part that has a knob connected to a stem to set the desired temperature. On some of the newer units the thermostat could be part an electronic control panel. The way it works is that when the setting indicated on the thermostat is reached in the interior of the refrigerator, the thermostat reduces power to the compressor in order to stop it from cooling or freezing any further. Power to the compressor is restored when the temperature rises so that it can continue cooling until it reaches the designated temperature.

All of this is too much for the non-appliance repair specialist to really deal with. If your fridge is malfunctioning and you live in the New York, Yonkers, Bronx, Westchester area, call: 1 800 339-0353 for reinforcements from the Appliance Doctor.
