Refrigerator Troubleshooting: Some Helpful Tips

Refrigerator Troubleshooting

A refrigerator is one of those appliances that usually last a very long time. They are always on and working and never get a rest, unlike other home appliances. Refrigerators are made to last but like that guy Murphy always said about laws, if something can go wrong, it will. Nothing lasts forever, but it is reassuring to know that you don’t always have to call in appliance repair if you troubleshoot for certain minor problems that are common to all refrigerators, no matter what the brand.

There are a few minor problems that you might be able to take care of yourself without consulting an appliance repair specialist. These include: poor cooling, freezing problems and function stoppage. If the refrigerator isn’t cooling or if it has stopped working entirely, before you panic, stop and ask yourself: Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If your self tells you no, just reset it.

If the refrigerator has completely stopped working, check to see if the light comes on and/or if there is any noise coming from the fan or motor. (Discount all party sounds coming from those strange people next door.) Be reassured that if there are any sounds at all emanating from the refrigerator that it hasn’t completely stopped.

If the sound is a humming noise, it could be coming from the compressor, which is that case about the size of a football on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. In this case, the trouble could be a problem with one or more of the components and it might be best to ask a specialist in appliance repair for help.

The good news is that you may be able to solve the problem of noise if the trouble is the fan on the condenser. It may be just an issue of lint or other debris that has built up on the fan blade. The fan can be found near the back of the machine and is often behind a thin panel.

Before attempting to clean it, make sure you unplug the refrigerator. Remove the panel and clean it by using a soft bristle brush. The bad news is that if there is no build up of debris, you will probably have to call in an appliance repair specialist and replace the motor.
