Expensive appliance repairs can sometimes be avoided. The first thing is not to panic and to do some troubleshooting before calling in costly appliance repair specialists.

Make sure that the appliance in question is plugged in. As silly as this sounds, many times people don’t, and they often end up having to pay a fee just to have an expert come to the house and plug it in. (The fee also covers the promise not to tell anyone they know.)

Many appliance problems you can either fix yourself or prevent. For example, a refrigerator that won’t cool could involve the simple adjustment of the cold-control setting. Keep the coils in the bottom or back of your refrigerator clean from dust and pet hair by using a coil brush or the crevice tool on your vacuum.

For a dishwasher that isn’t cleaning, make sure there is a rinse agent. Also, use powder rather than liquid soap, as the latter tends to clog the machinery. If your dishwasher has a screen or filter on the bottom, wash off all the food particles, since they can become as one with your dishes.

If your clothes dryer isn’t working properly, make sure the lint screen is clean after every load and that the vent to the outside isn’t blocked. Check to insure that you didn’t accidentally set the controls on “fluff” or “no heat.”

If you own a high efficiency, front-loading washing machine, make sure you use the soap marked HE. Repeated use of regular soap often damages the main bearings, resulting in an expensive appliance repair. Do not overload your washer or under any circumstances (even if you pass go and collect $200) put rubber-backed throw rugs into either your washer or dryer. The backing unravels into small pieces and wreaks havoc with the washer’s pump.

Check your power before calling for help about electrical dryers that run but do not heat. Electric dryers use 220-volt electrical supply and the motor will run without the heat functioning if one leg of the power supply is disrupted. If you don’t check the power, you may need an electrician and not an appliance repair specialist and may end up paying for both.

So look before you leap and check plugs and troubleshoot BEFORE you call for help.

The check you will not have to write may well be your own.

If you’ve checked for trouble spots and you appliance is still not working, give us a call at:

Rusting on stainless steel is an issue that we are very familiar with here at the Appliance Doctor. No matter what the product and/or make of the product may be, rusting is a problem that is seen all the time.

Although many of us may attribute these rust issues to the machines location or outside factors, the main dilemma can be blamed on the products that you are using to clean your machines. Certain cleaners, especially those containing bleach, are harmful to your machine and its beautiful décor. In fact, although many cleaners state on the bottle that they can be used on stainless steel, this is not true.

Chlorine, which is found in most of your household cleaning products, forms a chemical reaction when used on stainless steel. The product is actually causing oxidation on your metal surface which is then creating that stubborn rust that you can’t get rid of.

Our suggestion to you would be to use a little soap and water and to purchase a stainless steel polish. Stainless steel polishes are made from Mineral Oil, making them light yet effective. A gentle cleaning with the soap and water, followed by a smooth polish will leave your appliance shiny, clean, and more importantly, rust free!

1. Do not use abrasive cleaners that will scratch the surface- Depending on the surface finish of your stainless steel, abrasive cleaners can cause scratching. Duller finishes probably won’t show scratching as much as mirror or highly polished finishes. When in doubt, test in a hidden spot, and also work from the least risky type of cleaning, (ie water) to the heavy duty stuff.

2. Do not forget to rinse—Gritty or dirty water, or residue from cleaning solutions left on a stainless steel surface can stain or damage the finish.

3. Do not use cleaners containing chlorine.—While it may be second nature to bleach everything, stainless steel and chlorine don’t mix. Stay away from the bleach when you clean stainless steel.

4. Do not use steel wool or steel brushes—These products leave little particles in the surface of the steel and inevitably these particles begin rusting and staining the surface of the steel. They also can excessively scratch the surface of your stainless steel.

5. Do not assume it’s the cleaner.—If you do have some spotting or staining, and you’ve followed all the rules, it may not be the cleaner. Water, especially hard water, can leave spotting and staining on stainless steel surfaces. Towel dry after rinsing can end the problem.

Appliance repair companies may be a dime a dozen, but if you need such services for GE products in the New York area, a general rule of thumb is to select a company that has been in business for years, and the longer the merrier, as that old saying sort of goes.

Appliance Doctor has a passion for serving customers in Manhattan, Westchester and the Bronx, and their commitment is as compelling today as it was when they began offering high-end repair and services to customers more than three decades ago.

Murphy’s Law promises that if anything can go wrong, it will. Appliances can break down at any time and usually do at the most inopportune moments. This often dictates the need for same day service. For the most effective appliance repair in New York, it’s best to have a name to call, rather than to have to forage for one at a time when your clothes may be doing their rinse cycle on the ceiling or the food in your GE refrigerator has started to turn a color that no one has ever seen before (or even wishes to see again).

Choosing a company that offers appliance repair in NYC requires some research, since you as an educated consumer want to make sure that the company you select is one you can trust and turn to whenever your GE and other brand appliances need servicing.

Word of mouth is the best reference for any company that deals in the repair of home appliances. Finding the best company for appliance repair in Manhattan is best achieved by asking those you know who is the best in town and whom they would never call again, even if all their appliances were running amok at the same time. A reputable company will always be transparent when it comes to displaying their service record. Appliance Doctor is all about consumer satisfaction, and they go that extra mile for their customers by offering a free consumer special report about appliance repair in New York that tells you what you should know before you make that important call. It is available at www.appliancedoctorx.com.

New York City appliance repair companies often employ technicians who have a high school diploma but generally have little or no training in repairing appliances. Appliance Doctor makes 60 service calls per day, and each technician has to complete 35 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of hands on training a year.

Richard Sedlack, an ex GE regional trainer, is one of the most respected technicians in the field, and for the last seven months he has been a part of the Appliance Doctor repair staff. Three times a year technicians attend his training sessions in order to keep abreast of the latest techniques in New York appliance repair.

Need GE appliance repair in New York City?

Check out available resources before appliance trouble begins and not while things are in a state of flux so that Murphy’s Law will at least have a little trouble making its way up your driveway or to your apartment door.

Microwave repair is one of the most dangerous appliance repair jobs, despite their small size and functionality as a countertop appliance. Issues with your microwave that could require repair include a broken revolving tray, uneven cooking, lack of heat, sparking and unresponsive buttons.

These issues can be a tough fix. Therefore, it is important that if you need microwave repair, it is best not to attempt to fix it on your own. Microwaves are high voltage appliances that can deliver a fatal shock, even when unplugged. An Appliance Doctor Technician is the best solution to identify the exact problem with your microwave.

There are however some things that don’t involve disassembling your device that could fix your problems.

Repairing your microwave

A sparking microwave is a serious but common problem. If your microwave is sparking it could be due to grease and food build up. Wash out your microwave with a warm sponge and detergent to clean out any grease that may have accumulated. Also, if your microwave includes a cooking rack, sparks may be signs that it is loose.
If you have a chip inside your microwave, it could be a much bigger problem than just aesthetics. The crack could be leaking radiation. Call the Appliance Doctor to have it tested. Most problems that result in the microwave ceasing to work can be easily fixed by replacing a part. A technician can easily replace a fan motor, or internal switch and have your microwave running like new!

Broken refrigerator? You’re not the only one with a desperate need for home appliance repair, according to The Appliance Doctor’s new video.

The Appliance Doctor has been having fun creating their YouTube commercials lately. Taking a cue from what commonly goes viral, The Appliance Doctor has captured a one-minute clip of a college student with a webcam, ranting to the Internet about his broken refrigerator.

While there are many actual videos out there of young people exposing their angst to anyone on the internet who is willing to listen, there are few sponsored commercials playing upon the trend.

Broken refrigerator!? Help me now, Appliance Doctor!

And now a brief summary of the Appliance Doctor’s take on how a sad college student realizes he needs a home appliance repair for his broken refrigerator:

A broken refrigerator? Devastation sets in on college kid. Within his first few moments of heartbreak, he does not yet realize that his broken refrigerator can be fixed by calling for a simple home appliance repair.

Filled with inner torment, college kid complains to his webcam about how he woke up that morning and his refrigerator was warm. All he knows is that he needs home appliance repair for his broken refrigerator… but how can he get that?

“All my beer is now warm, my ice cream is all melted and I don’t know who to call!” he says to the camera. “My parents… they are actually going to kill me, you know” he says, with hopeless, sad eyes.

With his head in his hands he takes a minute to compose himself; to consider what home appliance repair options he has for his broken refrigerator, in his university dorm room.

“Wait!” He exclaims. “I think I can call The Appliance Doctor! The Appliance Doctor! Help me! Help me!”

You thought right, college kid– The Appliance doctor can fix any broken refrigerator!

The Appliance Doctor is always ready to fix any broken refrigerator, whether it is a mini fridge in a college dorm or an industrial size. In fact, the Appliance Doctor is always ready for any home appliance repair in NYC, Westchester County or the Bronx.

Bosch appliance repair is one of the Appliance Doctor of NYC’s Specialties.

Going through a smaller privately owned company like the Appliance Doctor is an ideal option for many people who have invested large sums of money on their appliance and need a trust worthy Bosch dishwasher repair, Bosch washing machine repair, Bosch dryer or any other Bosch appliance repair.

When you call the Appliance Doctor of NYC you will get a factory authorized Bosch appliance repair from a company that is certified on your particular appliance without having to go through the hassle of getting someone who actually works at Bosch. The Appliance Doctor offers factory authorized warranty service on high end products since 1980.

Bosch Appliance Repair – How to Avoid Needing One

The best way to avoid needing a Bosch appliance repair is to simply take care of your Bosch appliance!

Often times the reason our customers call for Bosch appliance repair is because they think that their Bosch dishwasher, Bosch washing machine, Bosch dryer etc. isn’t working properly, when the truth of the matter is often that the customer is simply not using their Bosch appliance correctly.

You can avoid Bosch appliance repair by using the machine correctly. For example, before you think you need a Bosch dishwasher repair, make sure you are loading the machine correctly. Dishes should all face inward so they have full access to the flowing water.

If your Bosch washing machine has an EO1 error, you might not need to call for Bosch washing machine repair, because this error code means that there is an unsafe amount of lint stuck in there. You should try cleaning out the ductwork yourself before calling for Bosch washing machine repair.

Always read the instruction manual before using your new and expensive appliance before you start using it, and of course, before you call for Bosch appliance repair.

If you do ever need Bosch appliance repair, or any other specific brand name appliance repair, make sure you use a trusted and convenient company like The Appliance Doctor of NYC!

Did you know that the average American family washes 400 loads of laundry each year? If you are a washing machine owner, consider the pros and cons of front-loading washing machines.

Pros of Front Loading Washing Machines

Front-loading washing machines become more popular every year. Because of their improved design they generally require less time from appliance repair technicians in NYC.

Most of them bear the Energy Star label, meaning that they significantly cut energy and water costs for the user. These front-loading washing machines are super because they use less water, as the water level does not have to fill to the top like in a conventional machine.

Aside from paying for a smaller bill, other benefits of front-loading washing machines include greater cleaning capabilities, an easier way to add detergent and an interior that is much easier to clean.

While there are many great benefits to front-loading washing machines, there are some appliance repair cons that come with them as well.

Cons on Front Loading Washing Machines

One problem with front-loading machines is that mold or mildew can get caught inside or around the rubber “boots” (rubber gasket) located around the door. This mold can create a bad smell, which is on one of the biggest complaints from those who own this sort of machine, such as a Maytag washing machine, Neptune washing machine, and Whirlpool Elite washing machine.

One thing that the Appliance Doctor recommends that you do to prevent this smell is to dry the boot with a towel after you’ve finished doing your laundry for the day. Currently, the Whirlpool Elite Washing machine offers a “Fan Fresh” option that will circulate air after a cycle to dry out the boot so you wont have to.

Another con is that front-loading washing machines are generally more expensive than top loaders. You don’t want to risk breaking such an expensive machine by trying to fix it yourself. The Appliance Doctor technicians have received the proper training to clean the rubber boot and preform a front-loading washing machine repair. You should leave it to a professional appliance repair technicians in NYC to take the care necessary to ensure the machine’s integrity and to spare you the expensive of replacing the boot. After, the repair is complete; the customer is advised to use an “Affresh” tablet regularly to abate this problem.

If your washing machine is not draining properly, stops mid-cycle, or if the detergent dispenser is broken, our appliance repair technicians can make a house call within a few hours to fix the problem. The Appliance Doctor is one of the best appliance repair technicians in NYC.

If you’re asking “What is the best way to clean refrigerator coils?” chances are that you already know about all the perks of keeping them dirt and dust free.
-Cleaning refrigerator coils saves energy by allowing the appliance to run more smoothly.
-For the same reason it saves energy, cleaning refrigerator coils helps prevent the need for a professional appliance repair, as dirt and dust build up is the number one cause of breakage.
-Your food may not have the life span that it should if your refrigerator isn’t getting cold enough. Often times, the simple task of cleaning refrigerator coils will keep your produce from spoiling.
-By saving energy, avoiding a professional appliance repair, and prolonging the live of your food, cleaning refrigerator coils inevitably saves you lots of money!

Convinced yet? While there are a few ways to do it, we’re here to provide you with the best way to clean refrigerator coils in an easy, step-by-step process.

It’s simple to do: Start cleaning refrigerator coils today!

First, unplug the refrigerator! Then clear anything blocking the air flow around the outside of the refrigerator (on top, underneath, behind, beside, in front of, etc.).

Allow at least 3” of clearance all the way around. Don’t start jamming cleaning tools back there without enough space. You might damage the coils, and then you’ll really need a professional appliance repair!

If the condenser coils are underneath the refrigerator, clean the coils with a vacuum cleaner thoroughly at least twice a year to remove dust and dirt. An upholstery brush attachment typically works fine as well, although you will need to make sure you can also fit a broom back there. If you don’t have a vacuum or brush that can reach the spots you need to clean, or the filth is more than just collected particles, you can also use warm water and dish soap to remove any stickiness.

Reasons why the refrigerator is the most necessary professional appliance repair, and how to prevent needing one

Refrigerator repair: It’s that one professional appliance repair that you hope you never, ever have to deal with.

Your refrigerator is your most essential appliance in your house, your apartment, or your college dorm room. Unless you’ve stocked up on crackers and Twinkies, you need your refrigerator to preserve your food. If something goes wrong, you need to act fast on getting a refrigerator repair before everything inside goes foul. And take it from someone who has dealt with his fair share of broken refrigerators, you do not want that to happen!

Refrigerator Repair, or Refrigerator Replace?

The typical refrigerator lifespan, depending on its initial quality, lasts approximately 8-14 years, so even if you are seven years down the road with your refrigerator, it is still worth it to call for professional appliance repair. A refrigerator is large, heavy and unwieldy, so you don’t want to just go about tossing each one that has a glitch in the ice machine. Not to mention that it takes time to pick out a new refrigerator, get it home and installed properly. In most situations, a refrigerator repair is much faster, more affordable and more convenient than finding a replacement.

Avoid needing a professional refrigerator repair with this simple tip:

With some simple maintenance and upkeep, you can avoid needing a professional refrigerator repair for as long as possible. The most important thing you can do is to regularly clean the mechanics, or coils, of your refrigerator.

Refrigerators come in three different configurations: If your refrigerator has coils on the back, you should check them about twice a year to see if dirt and dust have collected. If so, the filth should be thoroughly cleaned and removed. If the coils are on top of the unit, check and clean them annually. If the coils are underneath the unit, they only need to be cleaned once every two or three years.

Dirty coils are the number one reason people call for refrigerator repair, and they don’t even know it! If refrigerator coils are not cleaned regularly, the build up of dust and dirt will cause the compressor to overheat. This will cause the unit to shut down causing the food in your refrigerator to spoil which would be costly.

Whether you have a GE refrigerator, Whirlpoor, Maytag, Subzero, Kenmore, Amana or any other type of refrigerator, keeping it fresh and clean will allow you to avoid a professional appliance repair for as long as possible. Stay tuned for our next blog about cleaning refrigerator coils!
