Shopping for a Refrigerator: When a Bottom Freezer is not Right for You

Refrigerators come in all types of configurations nowadays. You can have a top freezer, a side freezer, or a bottom freezer. If you can afford it, you can even purchase two separate fridge and freezer units which are side-by-side. While you’re searching for the right refrigerator, here are 3 reasons why a bottom freezer refrigerator may not be the best appliance for your family’s needs.

Bending and Reaching into Your Freezer

Bottom freezer units allow the majority of your refrigerator needs to be at eye level. While these units are popular today, what many don’t consider is that you’ll need to reach down low to access the frozen food at the bottom. If you’re an older person, someone with a bad back or inquisitive toddlers, this may not be a great option for your family.

Losing Space

Bottom freezer units give you wider shelves to fit your food on to in both the fridge and freezer sections. This means you’ll no longer need to break up your casserole dishes into smaller portions just to store them. The flip side is that you lose a lot of vertical space in your refrigerator, which leaves you having to lay taller items like 2-liter bottles on their side if the doors aren’t equipped to store them.

Considering Cost

Refrigerators with bottom freezers are much more expensive than traditional ones with the freezer on the top. They’re slightly more expensive than side-by-side units as well. Regardless of which bottom freezer you choose – the one with a single wide door for the refrigerator or the one with 2 smaller French doors – it’s still going to be more expensive overall than your other options. In addition to the purchase price, consider than annual energy costs when you’re pricing them.

Make sure you consider all of your options when shopping for a new refrigerator. Fancier may not always be better, but being an informed consumer is. Regardless of which type of refrigerator you end up purchasing, Appliance Doctor should be your first choice when looking for appliance repairs in the Manhattan, Bronx and Westchester County.
